Maramures is a region up northern Romania, surrounded with mountains and with picturesque meadows and valleys, where people still wear their traditional clothes everyday. The region is also famous for the small timber houses, with huge wooden entrance gates and for the wooden churches competing to reach the sky.
DAY 1:
Arriving to Cluj Napoca airport, where you will be picked up and transferred by car to Maramures region. About 3 ½ hours drive to our accommodation.
Dinner and accommodation in a small village, on Mara valley, in a restored wooden house. Dinner at the accommodation.
EASTER NIGHT: The most important church service for Easter is held midnight. Assist at midnight service to one of the wooden churches. People walk three times around the church with the candles lit.
DAY 2:
EASTER DAY: In the morning people return to the church to attend the FOOD Blessing. People will stay after service to bless their food for the Easter. They all put the baskets in the yard and the priest will read the service. It is a great moment to watch, very touching and seen best in Maramures. Have the Easter Lunch with our hosts. Traditional food: lamb, red eggs and cozonac (the Easter cake). A walk in the after noon from village to village (about 3 hours walk).B L D
DAY 3:
Second day of Easter: Drive over the mountains to south Maramures, to attend the annual agrarian festival ” Udatoriul”. Enjoy the parade and the walk from the church to the river with all the villagers dressed traditional, followed by music and dance. B D
DAY 4:
Explore Maramures by car, visiting Sapanata Merry Cemetery, Sighetul Maramtiei (the prison, the market and the town) and villages.
